Data Analytics Certificate Program
There are 40,000 high-paying Data Analyst job openings right now for people with the necessary skills and experience. Because the workforce demand for data analytics skills is outpacing the supply, the Nevada Workforce Innovations for the New Nevada (WINN) fund created a Data Analytics certificate program with TMCC and NCLab, which launched in 2019. Through the Education and Workforce Development Pathway 2 component of the HDRFS project, we are leveraging this investment by providing tuition coverage each year for a cohort of students to participate in the program.
This program seeks to address one of the fastest-growing workforce needs within Nevada’s economy. The demand for data analytics skills in both research and industry is growing rapidly, as underscored in the NSHE Science and Technology Plan, due to the fact that all aspects of commerce, industry, society, and government are increasingly dependent upon digital and information technologies. SQL programming and Python programming, both taught in the Data Analytics program, are in the top ten hard skills demanded by Nevada employers.
Out of the 103 applications we received this year across NSHE, 37 students were selected to participate in NCLab’s Python or SQL training program. Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate of recognition for completing the program. Students will then have the opportunity to apply for a funded research internship with HDRFS faculty mentors across all NSHE institutions. Interns who are selected will be supported with a $4,000 scholarship for a four-month, 20-hour per week commitment during Spring of 2024. This provides them with a work-based opportunity to utilize their newly minted skillset processing and analyzing data for HDRFS researchers.
When asked about the opportunity to participate in a Data Analytics training program one of the students said:
I would highly recommend this program to someone who is interested in learning data analytics. This is because the data analytics course has taught me fundamental knowledge about the SQL language which I would not have easily learned otherwise. The information in the course is provided in an easily understandable manner, allowing for even difficult-to-grasp concepts to be understood. Additionally, every unit provides hands-on practice questions, allowing students to understand and refine the information being taught. Most importantly, however, the work I have completed so far has given me the confidence that I will be able to pursue a career in data analytics upon completion of this program.
Applications for next year’s cohort will open in Spring 2024 and will be announced through our website and newsletter. For more information and to learn more about this exciting program, visit the HDRFS website.
